Ben’s Story

Ben had been having vision problems and severe headaches for a few months. On September 19, 2016 Ben was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 9.

Ben is a local student that attended Cherokee Elementary School and Indian Trail Intermediate School. His parents grew up here in Johnson city as well. Ben has one older brother, Joshua.

By September 22, the family had dropped everything to drive to Memphis. They checked in at St. Judes hospital so Ben could receive the care he needed.

Before Ben’s surgery, he decided to name his tumor, “fear”. When the doctors removed the tumor, then he would be “fearless”.

The doctors removed Ben’s tumor on September 28. 30 minutes after the surgery, he started radiation treatments.

Ben has had 5 cycles of chemo since the tumor removal. He is getting ready to start his last round of treatments and the family hopes to be back home by July.

Ben is doing pretty well but the family will need to continue to make monthly trips to Memphis for follow-up visits once he is released.

Unfortunately, While in Memphis for ben’s treatment, His family was involved in a traffic accident that totaled their van. Another vehicle ran a stop sign and hit them.

The Boone’s are a family of 4 and Ben has a lot of additional medical equipment they must transport. This 5K is to raise money to help the family  purchase a van. The van will provide reliable transportation to take Ben and family from Johnson city to Memphis for his monthly checkups.
